Cokato School Timeline

Picture

1872-1891

The first school building was built in 1872. It was originally where the swimming pool is now. In 1884, a new two-room school house was constructed on Cokato Elementary's present site. In 1891, a two-story addition was made to the rear and south side of the building.

1902-1909

The old wooden building was replaced by a new brick building. The school received a two-story addition on its south side in 1909.

On the morning of June 15th the school burned down. It was rebuilt in time for fall term using only the insurance money.

1968-1972

By 1968, Cokato Public School was bursting at it seams with large student numbers. A temporary solution came in the form of portable classrooms, which were added to school grounds for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.

In 1969, the Cokato School District merged with Dassel. However, both Cokato and Dassel students remained in their separate schools, until the new Dassel-Cokato High school opened in the fall of 1972.

With the new facility open, the Cokato Public School became the Cokato Elementary, housing grades K-6.

1973

The old section of the high school , dating back to 1902-1909, was taken down. New classrooms, a mechanical room, and work room were built in its place. The 1962 shop and Home EC. sections were also remolded into ten classrooms.

1992

A tornado destroyed parts of the elementary school, resulting in additions to the south and northwest ends of the building.
